How to Use Your One-Rep Max to Plan Smarter Training
Your one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single, complete rep with good form. It's one of the most useful numbers in strength training — not because you should be testing it every week, but because it lets you plan every other week of training around a consistent reference point.
Why not just test it directly?
A true 1RM attempt is taxing on the nervous system and carries real injury risk without a spotter, a warm-up protocol, and some experience under the bar. Most lifters — and most coaches — prefer to estimate it from a set done well within a safer rep range, then use that estimate to plan training. The Epley formula
The calculator uses the Epley formula, one of the most widely used estimation methods: 1RM = weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30). It works because there's a fairly predictable relationship between how much weight you can move and how many times you can move it, at least within a reasonable rep range. The formula gets less reliable the higher the rep count goes — estimates from a set of 3–6 reps tend to be noticeably more accurate than estimates from a set of 15, since fatigue and pacing start to matter more than raw strength at higher reps.
Turning your 1RM into a training plan
Once you have an estimated max, training percentages tell you how heavy to load the bar for a given goal. These are the ranges most strength programs are built around:

Different lifts, different numbers — and that's normal
It's completely expected for your deadlift and squat estimates to be noticeably higher than your bench press. Deadlifts and squats recruit larger muscle groups and more favourable leverages for moving heavy loads, while bench press relies more on smaller muscle groups with less mechanical advantage. Comparing your 1RM across different lifts isn't a useful exercise — comparing your own numbers over time, on the same lift, is where the real signal is.
