Body Fat Percentage: How to Measure It Without a DEXA Scan

A DEXA scan is the gold standard for measuring body fat, but it means booking an appointment, paying £40-£80, and travelling to one of the handful of clinics that offer it. The U.S. Navy method needs none of that — just a tape measure and your height — and it's accurate enough to track real progress over time, which is what actually matters for almost everyone outside of a lab study.

How the Navy method works

Instead of pinching skinfolds or stepping on a bioelectrical scale, the Navy method estimates body fat from a handful of circumference measurements — neck and waist for men, with hip added for women — plugged into a logarithmic formula validated against hydrostatic (underwater) weighing in U.S. military studies. The logic is straightforward: waist size relative to neck size tracks fairly closely with abdominal fat, which is the single biggest driver of overall body fat percentage for most people.

Studies comparing the Navy method to DEXA and hydrostatic weighing generally find it lands within about 3-4 percentage points for most body types — accurate enough to spot a genuine trend over weeks or months. It gets less reliable at the extremes: very lean, muscular individuals and people with unusually high body fat tend to see bigger gaps from lab measurements. For everyday tracking, though, consistency matters more than lab-grade precision — measuring the same way, at the same time, gives you a trend you can actually trust.

These bands are a reference point, not a target to chase for its own sake. "Athletic" and below usually require the kind of sustained training and dietary discipline that comes with real trade-offs — for most people, sitting comfortably in the fitness or average range with good energy, strength, and health markers is a far more sensible goal than chasing the lowest possible number.

Track the trend, not the snapshot

Any single body fat reading — from the Navy method, a DEXA scan, or a bioelectrical scale — carries enough measurement error that one number in isolation isn't worth over-interpreting. What's genuinely useful is measuring the same way, at the same time of day, roughly every 2-4 weeks, and watching the direction it moves over two or three months. A single reading might be off by a few percentage points; a consistent downward or upward trend across six or eight measurements almost never is. This is exactly why the Navy method, despite being less precise than a lab scan, is often more practically useful — it's free and quick enough that you'll actually keep doing it.
